By choosing an ethical breeder, you help preserve the integrity of the breed, reduce the demand for irresponsible breeding operations, and ensure that each kitten is raised with care, transparency, and respect from birth onward.

Our Story

Summit Rex is a small, Devon Rex cattery established in 2018 & located in Colorado Springs. We are TICA registered and named after the Rocky Mountains, which form the backdrop to everything we do here in Colorado. The cattery is run by me, Dawn Sanchez, and my home is managed by my Devon Rex, Winston, who inspired me to start breeding this amazing breed. Winston captured my heart and sparked my passion for learning everything I could about Devon Rex cats and responsible breeding.

With guidance from my mentors, Todd and Michelle of Comix Cattery in Texas, I have grown both in knowledge and confidence. They have supported me throughout this journey and have become wonderful friends along the way. Their mentorship has been invaluable in helping me navigate the world of breeding while prioritizing the health and well-being of my cats.

Summit Rex is built on the philosophy of improving the Devon Rex breed while producing strong, healthy, and loving pets for families. All of our cats undergo genetic disease screening and annual HCM scans to ensure their health, so that every kitten we raise has the best possible start in life.

Bringing a Devon Rex into your home is a joyful and exciting experience—but it’s also a big responsibility. Choosing the right breeder can make all the difference in your cat’s health, temperament, and quality of life. At Summit Rex, we believe in educating prospective owners so they can make informed choices. One of the most important distinctions to understand is the difference between ethical breeders and backyard breeders.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Summit Rex does not maintain a waiting list. After seeing how often waiting lists lead to disappointment for both breeders and families, we have chosen a more transparent approach. When kittens are born, they will be announced on our social media platforms, where their growth and development will be shared as they mature.

  • Every Summit Rex breeding cat is comprehensively health tested, including full genetic screening through Optimal Selection, FIV/FeLV testing, and annual cardiac scans for HCM.

  • Summit Rex is currently focused on thoughtfully building our cattery and establishing strong, healthy lines. At this time, we do not place breeding cats. All kittens are sold as pets and will go home altered.

  • Summit Rex is an intentionally small cattery, producing only one to three litters per year. This is not a high-volume operation, but a passion-driven program dedicated to the Devon Rex breed. We will never overbreed our queens, and every breeding is planned with their health, wellbeing, and longevity as the top priority.

  • For the safety and wellbeing of our kittens, Summit Rex does not ship kittens as cargo. We strongly believe the best way to welcome your new kitten home is through in-person pickup. Families may fly in and return home with their kitten safely in the cabin, or we can assist in arranging a trusted, professional pet courier.

  • For the safety of our cats and our home, Summit Rex does not offer in-home visits. This policy also helps protect our cats from outside illnesses. We are happy to arrange FaceTime calls for serious inquiries and regularly share photos and videos. We are intentional about where our kittens are placed and value getting to know potential families before making a match.
